What is an interface engine and how they are used to deploy HL7 Solutions?
Someone that is new to the healthcare interoperability space may ask, what is the driving force behind connecting systems to each other. Some may think that it seamlessly works behind the scenes with embedded code within the application but that is far from the truth. The driving force behind most interoperability projects are what we call in the Healthcare IT space an interface engine.
An interface engine is a software application that can process and connect multiple different Healthcare IT systems together. The interface engine acts as a middleware where all data flows between the different technology systems within a Healthcare organization. The interface analysts or interface engineer will create threads and transformations that give the interface engine instructions on how to understand the type of data that is being received, it is like a blockchain network where multiple different systems or organizations wich have their own interface engine to be able to connect and send data to each other with the ability to speak the same language.
In the interoperability space the predominate language that each system sends to communicate patient data like admissions, discharges, transfers, pharmacy orders, lab results and radiology results is what we call a HL7 message. As we discussed how an interface engine plays a big role in integrating different systems together, the interface engine plays an even bigger role translating and delivering HL7 messages between the different healthcare applications. HL7 right out of the box of healthcare applications do not seamlessly mesh together when the raw message format is sent so the interface engine must have the capability to transform that message to what the receiving systems needs for what I call complete interoperability.
As you can see the role of an interface engine is vital when integrating healthcare systems. Some of the key take a way’s is that to deliver a complete integration between system an interface engine is a must and having an organization or resource that has the correct expertise to help your organization deploy and manage the interface engine and the integrations projects is key.
