COVID-19 Affects Pediatricians More Than Pediatric Patients

Optimizing the Wellbeing of Children: Pediatricians and Public Health

COVID-19 Affects Pediatricians More Than Pediatric Patients

The latest and continuing coronavirus infection 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has taken an alarming toll on COVID-19-infected adults who are ill. Although there is confirmation that the burden of COVID-19 disease in hospitalized patients is lower than in adults, only a few studies document COVID-19 in pediatric intensive care units to date (PICUs).

What is Coronavirus?

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which is caused by the severe acute respiratory disorder coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a global health and economic catastrophe unprecedented in the last 100 years.

COVID-19 and Pediatricians

COVID-19 causes severe disease in infants and children less often than it does in adults, according to two preliminary retrospective reports from Wuhan. 3.4 The first study, based on data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention3, found that only 1.3 percent of the 72 314 COVID-19 patients were under the age of 20. In a subsequent study, 171 children under the age of 16 were examined.

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the world's wellbeing. To our knowledge, this is the first multicenter cross-sectional analysis of its kind in the United States, and it adds to the growing body of data on COVID-19-infected infants and children.

Most PICUs throughout North America recorded no children registered with COVID-19 during the study period, indicating that the incidence of illness in infants and children with COVID-19 is much less than that documented in adults. More than 80% of the chronically ill children with COVID-19 have severe long-term underlying health issues.

Final words

In this series, overall survival and serious illness outcomes in infants and children with COVID-19 were much better than those recorded for adult patients. Currently, our data show that children are much more likely to develop critical illness from influenza than from COVID-19. Our findings lay the groundwork for more in-depth studies of COVID-19 in adolescents, with larger cohorts and more extended follow-up periods.
